Abstract: | Autopsies of 3305 cases performed at the Department of Pathology, Nara
Medical University and affiliated hospitals from 1974 to 1998 are analyzed. The numbers
and rates of autopsy were highest in 1980, 224 cases and 48.4% respectively, and
subsequently they have declined, finally to 53 cases and 13.0% respectively in 1998. The
frequencies of main disorders were neoplasms (1853 cases), circulatory disturbances (528
cases), inflammation (466 cases), regenerative and reperative disorders (299 cases),
degenerative and metabolic disorders (164 cases), congenital diseases (141 cases) and
trauma and others (34 cases) in this order. The frequent anatomical diagnoses were lung
cancer (436 cases), liver cirrhosis (293 cases), liver cancer (262 cases), gastric carcinoma
(258 cases), leukemia (123 cases), multiple primary cancer (120 cases), myocardial
infarction (108 cases), pneumonia (105 cases), pancreatic cancer (104 cases), and
malignant lymphoma (88 cases). Among them, the rates of multiple primary cancer, lung
cancer, and leukemia showed a tendency to increase chronologically, while gastric
carcinoma showed a tendency to decrease. The value of autopsy extending our knowlege
of diseases is emphasized and means to improve autopsy rate are discussed. |
