| Abstract: | A regional survey of the incidence of several acute infantile neurological
disorders in 1997 was performed in Nara, concerning the incidence of aftereffects in
preventive vaccinations.
The most frequent disorder in the survey was 'aseptic meningitis' with 238 cases out of
the total of 394, while `epilepsy' was the second with 98 cases. Four out of eight patients
with `encephalitis' were of complication of rubella infection. Six cases of `encephalopathy',
including Reye syndrome, were reported in approximately 230,OOO children in Nara in 1997
(O.OO17 O/o), while one case of Reye syndrome after DPT vaccination occurred (O.OO14 %o)
among 70,OOO children who were injected with DPT in Nara in 1997. |
