Abstract: Effects of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DBcAMP) on the growth of cultured hepatoma cells were studied with rat Morris hepatoma cells (HTC) and human hepatoma cells (HepG_2). DBcAMP inhibited DNA synthesis in HTC without cytotoxicity. DBcAMP also induced tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) in HTC. DBcAMP inhibited DNA synthesis in HepG_2 at each time point during the 24h-culture. DBcAMP delayed the population doubling time of HepG_2 and the time at which the percentage of the cells with mitosis reached a peak. These observations suggested that DBcAMP has an inhibitory effect on the growth of hepatoma cells by elongating the cell cycle.
