| Abstract: | Ossifying fibroma is one of the fibro-osseus lesions, and a benign tumor which has a variety of bone formation in the fibromatous tissue. This report presents a case of an ossifying fibroma of the mandible associated with symptoms similar to an osteomyelitis. The patient was a 34-year-old female complaining of pain in the right submandibular region. The radiographs showed a relatively well-defined radiopaque change containing numerous radiolucent spots extending from the right second premolar to the right mandibular angle. She had hyposthesia of the right lower lip and a fistula with pus discharge in her submandibular region. Four months after her first visit, a radiolucent mass like a sequestrum was revealed radiographically.
After a segmental mandibulectomy preserving the periosteum, mandibular continuity was maintained using A-O reconstructing plate. In the histological findings, most of the tumor consisted of woven bone, and prolifera
tion of the immature fibrous connective tissue was found between trabeculae. The postoperative course was uneventful, and new bone formation induced by the remaining periosteum occurred around the plate. |
