requested us to obtain a collection of "Tobyo-ki" books, in which
patient narratives are described by the patients themselves
and/or their caregivers.
We decided to provide such a collection so that the University
Library users could study patients' psychological states, such
as fears and worrtes.
Following the guidelines provided by the "Healthcare
Information Bookshelf Project", we made preparations to
obtain as many of the above-mentioned diaries and records as
possible.
Finally, we opened the collection in March 2008. Over the five
months since, the number of users of this collection has rapidly
increased. Our future task is to consider how the collection
can be made available to the local community for improved
healthcare of the conrmunity. 5621271302009-06-20jpnhttp://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/jmla/kikanshi/cont-top.htmlpublisher

Nara Medical University Library had a detached stack to keep journals that were rarely used, such as books published before 1950 and duplicates of journals included in the main library. In January 2010,a decision was made to move the detached stack's rarely used journals by April 2010 so that the stack could be used in another way. Books published before 1950 and duplicates of journals already in the main library were disposed. The disposal work was undertaken because Nara Medical University decided to dispose of journals included in electronic journal back-files that the university had purchased as part of a surplus budget in 2009. A new staff member was employed for this work. In total,120 shelves were required to move foreign journals from the detached stack to a stack in the main library. In April 2010,except for journal bindings including supplements not included in the back-files,3200 journal bindings were disposed and 160 shelves were emptied. Because of the disposal work, the journals in the detached stack could be moved and kept in the main library. This result suggests that the disposal of journals covered in electronic journal back-files is an effective means ofcr eating space.

Before starting Twitter, we investigated Twitter use at other university libraries and found that 75 university libraries used Twitter. We decided to tweet 3 times a day and to provide information regarding opening hours, events, and book reviews, similar to the usage at other university libraries. A year has passed since we started to use Twitter, but we have only 22 followers. Information activities should be reconsidered so that Twitter may become helpful to library users.

Various information sources(point of care information tools) have been provided to respond to this need. Some reports have attempted to evaluate these tools. As these reports, the frequency of updates was highest for DynaMed and UpToDate had the largest number of topics. We set 3 clinical questions and compared the results of searches using 3 representative international point-of-care information tools (UpToDate, DynaMed, ACP PIER) and 1 Japanese tool (Konnichi-no Rinsho-Support). The survey showed that 3 international tools provided almost the same core references in their contents. The frequency of updates was not much difference between UpToDate and DynaMed. UpToDate provided recommendations based on not only references but also the opinions of experts. It could be said that UpToDate was the best tool, while it had some difficulties such as the length of sentences and high price. Although topic cover rate was less than UpToDate, DynaMed reached the level of practical use. The structure of ACP PIER is similar to DynaMed. Konnichi-no-Rinsho-Support is expected to be further developed as a point-of-care information tool for ]apanese researchers.

This study examined the usefulness of this machine to library users after their introduction. To measure user onvenience, data was collected from the library system log for the period between April and September in 2014 and 2015 (before and after the introduction). The research was done using the following method. Tne first step was to examine the change in the number of library materials borrowed during the targeted periods in 2014 and 2015. The second step was to compare the number of items borrowed during opening hours when library staff were present and during opening hours when library staff were not present. Next, the number of items borrowed per user group was calculated. And the third step was to examine the trends in the use of the self-checkout machine. Compared to the targeted period in 2014, the number of borrowed items increased by 39.8% during the targeted period in 2015. The number of items borrowed per user group also increased after the introduction of the self-checkout machine. The results showed that library users frequently used the self-checkout machine during opening hours when library staff were not present. The self-checkout machine was thought to help library users study and to contribute to the improvement of our library services.
